SEESAC in the Report "Closing the Gap: An Overview of UNDP Results in Gender Equality in Europe and the CIS"
The report ‘’Closing the Gap: An overview of UNDP results in gender equality in Europe and the CIS‘’ presents some of the key results achieved by UNDP Country Offices in Europe and Central Asia in 2014 in our efforts to eradicate the root causes of gender inequality. The report features SEESAC‘s work in increasing inclusivity in the Western Balkan armed forces.
As part of our Women in the Military Project, SEESAC supported the training and establishment of a regional network of gender trainers from the Armed Forces (AF) and Ministries of Defence (MoD) of the Western Balkans. The trainers aim to mainstream gender equality throughout the Armed Forces by sensitizing the staff, which in turn would help to attract and keep female personnel.
“Closing the Gap” Report highlights that 33 representatives from the Armed Forces in the Western Balkans were trained as gender trainers, as well as that 3200 officers and soldiers of the four AFs learnt how to embrace gender equality in the armed forces. Emphasizing the holding of seven regional meetings of gender equality mechanisms in the MoDs and AFs in the Western Balkans, the report also underlines that SEESAC’s Women in the Military Project contributed to the institutionalization of gender equality mechanisms, with first four Gender Focal Points appointed in the AF in Montenegro.
Organized along the thematic priorities of the UNDP Gender Equality Strategy (2014-2017), “Closing the Gap” Report focuses on results achieved in different areas: economic empowerment, access to resources and essential services, combating discriminatory social norms, promoting participation in decision-making, and building resilience. The report also highlights the need for accelerated efforts to overcome the many challenges to gender equality in Europe and CIS through strengthened partnerships with governments, development partners and diverse civil society organizations.
