IDAHOT 2014, Protect LGBT Free Expression!
In several countries across the world there are laws that seriously restrain the right to freedom of expression of LGBT people. In many others, it is society that punishes people from expressing their sexual orientation or gender identity through harassment, discrimination, and far too often with violence, including murder.LGBT people are often denied freedom of expression because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Many LGBT people around the world live in poverty due to, amongst other things, family rejection, lack of social safety nets, and the discrimination they face in accessing health services, education and employment. The poverty that LGBT people face also affects their freedom of expression and their voices are ignored and often left out from development and international co-operation strategies.
Both discrimination and poverty prevent access to freedom of expression of LGBT people.
Freedom of expression is the foundation of any democratic society & socio-economic development.
To mark IDAHOT 2014, we have decided to launch a multilingual online campaign, which, in line with Micro Rainbow International’s core work, raises awareness of the link between freedom of expression and socio-economic development.
