Roma People in Serbia and Their Security - Research Presentation in Belgrade

The second public presentation of the research findings obtained within the project “Roma Women and Men and Security Sector Reform in the Republic of Serbia” has been held in the Media Centre in Belgrade, on June 11th, 2014. Presentation attracted the media, representatives of the Ministry of Interior, the National Council of the Roma Minority, and other institutions, as well as diplomats (US Embassy included), NGOs and experts.

Beside the Public Policy Research Centre’s team - Svetlana Djurdjevic Lukic, the Centre's President and Jelena Radoman, lead researcher on the project, Karin Wagner, Governance Adviser at the Democratization Department of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, which had supported the project, was among the panellist, as well. The key contribution of the presentation was the opportunity for the representative of the National Council of the Roma Minority to raise the issue of expenses related to application to the Basic Police Training, as the call was ongoing, so that stakeholders present at the event was prompted to assist.

The presentation and dissemination of the publication resulted in extensive media coverage. All three national news agencies – Tanjug, Beta and Fonet filed reports which were used by daily press and online portals: RTS, B92, Blic, Danas, ‘Novi Magazin’, ‘Novinska informativna agencija Roma’, ‘Energyobserver’, ‘Mondo’, and news aggregates. Furthermore, long feature was published at ‘EuroActiv’, daily ‘Politika’ published own feature with a photo illustration, a news was published in free daily ‘24 sata’, while Sunday issue of big circulation illustrated ‘Politika Magazin’ carried a feature article on four pages. The research was also presented in the Radio Belgrade First Programme special programme of Roma newsroom ‘Romano Them’

Final presentation will take place in Niš (Media Centre), on June 13th.
